Information

This exceptionally rare freestanding desk, model JH-563, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Denmark during the 1950s. Wegner’s collaboration with Johannes Hansen is considered one of the most significant partnerships in 20th-century Danish design, and this desk embodies their shared commitment to craftsmanship, structural clarity, and refined form.

The desk is constructed from a combination of teak and oak, with visible brass hardware adding an elegant touch. The tabletop is made of solid teak, with carefully rounded edges and a softly beveled profile. The warm, golden-brown surface is finished to a matte sheen, allowing the natural grain and texture of the wood to shine through. The desk is supported by four tapered solid oak legs, which are slightly splayed to provide stability, and connected by turned oak stretchers that enhance both the structure and symmetry of the design.

A defining feature of the JH-563 model is the integrated V-shaped stretcher beneath the tabletop, which provides support to the central span and visually anchors the entire composition. The desk includes two suspended drawers—one on each side—crafted from darker-stained wood and fitted with carved recessed pulls. The drawers are mounted on brass sliding hardware and retain their original fittings, further reinforcing the high level of craftsmanship.

The desk is in excellent condition, with light age-related wear consistent with careful use. The surfaces are well-preserved with only minor surface marks, and the joinery remains tight and structurally sound. The drawers function smoothly, and the brass details have developed a soft, even patina, adding character to the piece.

The overall dimensions of the desk are 150 cm in width, 75 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height (approximately 59 inches wide, 29.5 inches deep, and 29.1 inches high). This piece remains a rare and highly coveted example of mid-century Danish design, combining exceptional craftsmanship with timeless elegance.
