Hans Wegner desk
This rare ladies desk was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Ry Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. Designed with a modest scale, the desk was intended as a personal writing table or a compact workstation. The top is rectangular and crafted from teak, with a softly rounded edge profile that adds a gentle touch to the overall design. The desk is supported by four tapered solid oak legs, creating a contrasting material composition that highlights Wegner’s nuanced approach to proportion and detailing.
The frontal apron of the desk features a single shallow drawer, centrally positioned and lockable, with a brass keyhole fitting and two circular wooden knobs. The drawer is constructed using dovetail joints and is lined with light-toned wood, further demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with Ry Møbler’s production standards. The legs are subtly inset, contributing to the desk’s light and elegant visual appearance while ensuring structural stability.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was a key figure in mid-century Danish design, bringing a sculptural and organic sensibility to modern functionalism. His education as a cabinetmaker and architect deeply influenced his design philosophy, which combined a respect for craftsmanship with a refined material language. This desk exemplifies his minimalist approach, focusing on the quality of construction, tactile experience, and a scale that is perfectly suited to the individual user.
Ry Møbler, established in the 1950s, was renowned for producing a range of Wegner’s case pieces and desks. The company’s workshop played an essential role in translating Wegner’s designs into finely crafted furniture, and their collaboration resulted in several iconic pieces that have since become benchmarks of Scandinavian modernism. Their attention to detail and commitment to high-quality production are evident in this desk.
The dimensions of the desk are 100 cm in width, 52 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height, which translates to approximately 39.4 inches wide, 20.5 inches deep, and 28 inches high in imperial units. The desk is in excellent original condition, with only minor age-appropriate wear to the finish. The drawer operates smoothly, and the original key is included, maintaining the authenticity and functionality of the piece.
