Hans Wegner dining chairs
Very rare set of 6 dining chairs model CH-23 designed by Hans Wegner. Produced by Carl Hansen & Son in Denmark. This rare set of six CH-23 dining chairs, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark in 1950, represents an early example of Wegner’s mastery of form, craftsmanship, and materiality.
The chairs are constructed from a combination of teak and oak, featuring a woven cane seat that highlights the Scandinavian modern emphasis on organic materials and traditional craftsmanship. The frame is composed of solid oak, with a slightly curved teak backrest that provides both aesthetic contrast and ergonomic support. The backrest features Wegner’s signature finger-jointed detailing, a refined woodworking technique that reinforces the connection between the uprights and the horizontal element. The rear legs are subtly tapered, complementing the natural curvature of the backrest and ensuring structural stability. The handwoven cane seat is tightly woven in a uniform pattern, offering a flexible yet durable seating surface. The front legs are rounded and slightly angled, contributing to the chair’s balanced proportions and mid-century modern aesthetic. The overall construction reflects Wegner’s approach to furniture design, which focused on the seamless integration of function, comfort, and sculptural beauty.
Hans J. Wegner was one of the most influential figures of Danish modernism, known for his dedication to traditional woodworking techniques and ergonomic refinement. His collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn produced some of the most iconic chair designs of the 20th century, many of which remain in production today.
Each chair measures 52.5 cm in width, 49 cm in depth, and 76.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 42.5 cm. In inches, these dimensions correspond to approximately 20.7 inches in width, 19.3 inches in depth, 30.1 inches in height, and a seat height of 16.7 inches.
