Hans Wegner dining chairs
This is a very rare and early set of dining chairs, model CH-31, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark during the 1950s. Executed in solid oak with hand-woven cane backs and seats, these chairs exemplify Wegner’s exploration of organic form and craft, merging structural clarity with tactile natural materials.
The frame is constructed from solid oak with a light, warm finish that enhances the visible grain pattern and natural character of the wood. The design emphasizes fluid transitions and subtle curves—most notably in the softly contoured back legs, which rise and taper into the curved crest rail. The front legs are cylindrical and slightly rounded, connected by a lower stretcher for additional stability. Both the seat and backrest are woven in cane, each executed with slightly different techniques. The seat features a horizontal weave for durability and comfort, while the backrest displays a more intricate interlaced pattern, creating a textured surface and visual richness. The backrest is slightly inclined and ergonomically curved, offering lumbar support within a minimal and visually light structure.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Scandinavian design. Trained as a cabinetmaker and architect, Wegner became known for his sculptural yet practical approach to seating design. Model CH-31 is among his early postwar designs and demonstrates his commitment to blending functionality, aesthetics, and natural materials.
Carl Hansen & Søn, founded in 1908, is a Danish manufacturer known for its long-standing collaboration with Wegner. The firm played a crucial role in producing and preserving many of Wegner’s most iconic works, using traditional joinery methods and sustainable materials. This set of chairs is preserved in very good vintage condition, with uniform patina to the oak frames and minimal wear to the cane. The woven elements show only minor signs of age and remain structurally intact.
Each chair measures 52 cm in width, 51 cm in depth, and 81 cm in height, with a seat height of 42 cm, corresponding to approximately 20.5 inches wide, 20 inches deep, 31.9 inches high, and 16.5 inches seat height.
