Information

This is a rare set of dining chairs designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Denmark during the 1950s.

The set includes chairs with the original design complemented by an available matching set of four armchairs. Constructed in oak, the frames exhibit the hallmarks of Danish cabinetmaking, with precise joinery, sculptural profiles, and ergonomic sensitivity. The chairs have been reupholstered in a dark charcoal wool-blend fabric, offering subtle contrast against the warm, aged tone of the oak. Each chair features a slightly curved, upholstered backrest and a shaped seat with subtle contouring for comfort. The front legs are cylindrical and straight, while the rear legs extend in a gentle backward angle, continuing into the vertical supports of the backrest. The horizontal rail below the seat incorporates a characteristic organic cut-out, introducing a visual lightness and reinforcing the structural integrity of the frame.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the leading designers of the Danish modern movement, widely recognized for his dedication to both craftsmanship and human-centered design. His long-standing collaboration with Johannes Hansen resulted in numerous highly regarded pieces that were produced in small quantities for a discerning clientele.

Johannes Hansen, active in Copenhagen throughout the mid-20th century, was one of Denmark’s most respected cabinetmakers and an early supporter of the functionalist movement. His workshop specialized in the production of limited-run and exhibition-quality furniture.

Each side chair measures 54 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 79.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm. In imperial units, the dimensions are approximately 21.3 inches wide, 19.7 inches deep, and 31.3 inches high, with a seat height of 16.9 inches. The set is in excellent structural condition, with lightly restored surfaces and newly upholstered cushions.
