Hans Wegner dining table
This is a rare and large version of the AT-314 dining table, designed by Danish architect Hans J. Wegner and produced by master cabinetmaker Andreas Tuck in Denmark. The table exemplifies Wegner’s ability to combine structural clarity with sculptural elegance, resulting in a piece that is both technically refined and visually balanced. It was produced during the mid-20th century, a period when Danish Modern design emphasized craftsmanship, honest materials, and functional form.
The table is crafted from teak and oak with brass fittings. The top surface is composed of richly grained teak, displaying warm reddish-brown tones with subtle variations that highlight the natural structure of the wood. The oak frame provides a lighter contrast, reinforcing the table’s structural integrity while preserving a harmonious tone across materials. Brass crossbars connect the legs, adding stability while also serving as a refined decorative element that enhances the table’s architectural character.
The X-shaped legs, known as “sabre legs” are a signature feature of this model. They are carefully shaped and joined with precision, reflecting the high standards of Danish cabinetmaking from the period. The table’s construction allows for extension with additional leaves, increasing its length from 194 cm (76.4 in) to 310 cm (122 in), while maintaining its structural lightness and proportion. Its width is 105.5 cm (41.5 in) and height 71 cm (28 in).
This example remains in good vintage condition, showing a consistent patina and signs of age-appropriate wear that attest to its authenticity and history of use. Designed and produced in Denmark during the height of the Scandinavian Modern movement, the AT-314 represents the collaboration between Wegner’s innovative design language and Andreas Tuck’s craftsmanship tradition, both of which helped define Danish furniture as a benchmark of mid-century design excellence.
