Hans Wegner dining table
This rare dining table, model JH-570, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by the Danish master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in 1951. It exemplifies Wegner’s pursuit of refined structural clarity, craftsmanship, and balance between materials, engineered with a purity of form that remains emblematic of Scandinavian modernism. Originally designed as a statement piece for flexible dining environments, the JH-570 merges artisanal woodworking with subtle mechanical ingenuity.
The table is constructed from a combination of teak and oak, with brass hardware details integrated into the extension mechanism. The tabletop surface displays the warm, reddish-brown hue and dense grain typical of old-growth teak, framed with a gentle, sculpted edge profile. The draw-leaf extensions slide out from beneath the top, supported by hidden brass runners and cantilevered brackets with precision-milled locking features. These brass fittings add an industrial yet subtle contrast to the otherwise organic wood construction.
The legs are crafted in solid oak and taper elegantly to the floor, visually light but structurally solid. Each leg is integrated with brass mounts into the apron, reinforcing the table’s mid-century commitment to integrity and modularity. The table’s shape remains rectilinear and minimal, yet softened by its fine edge rounding and leg orientation. This marriage of tactile warmth with technical execution is characteristic of Wegner’s early cabinetmaker collaborations, particularly with Johannes Hansen, who played a vital role in launching his career to international prominence.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was a central figure in 20th-century Danish furniture design, known for creating over 500 chairs and numerous tables during his prolific career. He collaborated closely with cabinetmakers such as Johannes Hansen to produce some of the most coveted Scandinavian furniture pieces of the era, prioritizing both form and joinery. The JH-570 was produced in limited quantities and is rarely found on the market today, especially in this original specification.
This example is in good vintage condition, with light surface wear and minor patina consistent with age and use. The finish has been preserved with care, and the mechanism remains fully functional. Subtle aging to the brass components adds further historical depth without compromising utility.
The dimensions of the table are: Width 180 cm (70.9 inches), extending to 270 cm (106.3 inches); Depth 100 cm (39.4 inches); Height 73.5 cm (28.9 inches).
