Information

This rare easy chair, model Papa Bear, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by A.P. Stolen in Denmark during the 1950s. The piece represents one of Wegner’s most iconic designs, balancing sculptural form with functional comfort. The model earned its nickname “Papa Bear” due to the armrests extending outward like protective paws, a detail that highlights Wegner’s approach to furniture as both organic and architectural.

The chair is constructed with a teak frame, complemented by oak legs that provide strength and stability while enhancing the warm tonality of the design. The armrests are capped with solid teak, forming a striking material contrast with the original fabric upholstery. The upholstery is woven in neutral earthy tones, creating a textured surface that softens the bold lines of the chair. The seat cushion rests on webbing, maintaining both support and flexibility. Signs of age and patina are visible, consistent with its vintage condition, contributing to the authenticity and character of the piece.

Hans Wegner, often referred to as the “Master of the Chair,” was one of the leading figures of Danish modern design. His philosophy was rooted in craftsmanship, ergonomics, and the use of honest materials, all of which are embodied in the Papa Bear chair. A.P. Stolen, the Copenhagen-based workshop, was instrumental in bringing many of Wegner’s designs into production, and their collaboration resulted in some of the most recognizable icons of Scandinavian modernism.

This model reflects the essence of mid-century Scandinavian furniture, where functionality, natural materials, and refined form merge seamlessly. The Papa Bear chair remains a highly regarded piece in design history, celebrated for its sculptural presence and enduring comfort.
