Hans Wegner easy chair

Information

A very rare and early version of the CH-27 easy chair designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949 and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark. This model represents one of Wegner’s earliest explorations of sculptural lounge seating, where organic form and structural clarity are combined into a distinctly modern expression.

The frame is crafted in solid oak, displaying a warm, natural tone with a clearly defined grain that enhances the chair’s sculptural qualities. The construction is both robust and refined, with elegantly tapered legs and a subtly reclined stance. The rear legs extend upward to form the back supports, terminating in softly rounded, horn-like finials that give the chair its characteristic silhouette. The armrests are gently curved and carefully shaped, providing a comfortable resting position while maintaining a light visual profile.

The seat and backrest are executed in tightly woven cane, creating a continuous surface that follows the chair’s angled geometry. The weaving is precise and rhythmic, offering both flexibility and support, while contributing a warm, tactile contrast to the solid oak frame. The slight curvature of the backrest and the low seat height emphasize a relaxed seating position, typical of Wegner’s early lounge designs.

From a structural perspective, the chair demonstrates Wegner’s cabinetmaking background, with visible joinery and a thoughtful integration of materials. The open sides and carefully balanced proportions lend the piece a sense of lightness despite its solid construction, reflecting the Danish modern emphasis on clarity, function, and craftsmanship.

This example remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use. The oak has developed a rich patina over time, and the cane shows light wear consistent with careful use, contributing to the overall character of the piece.

Dimensions: 72 x 73 x 76.5 cm (28.3 x 28.7 x 30.1 in). Seat height: 37 cm (14.6 in).
