Information

This is an early and rare example of the Flag Halyard Chair, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1950 and produced by Getama in Denmark. Unlike his predominantly wood-based works, the Flag Halyard Chair demonstrates Wegner’s fascination with industrial materials and experimentation. The chair reflects a bold departure into modernist language while maintaining the Danish values of comfort, craftsmanship, and sculptural integrity.

The chair is constructed from a lacquered steel frame, hand-woven flagline, and solid wooden disc feet, combined with a sheepskin throw and a green cotton head cushion for enhanced comfort. The flagline—a type of tightly wrapped jute rope—forms a taut and supportive sling seat that adapts to the sitter’s body. The open, geometric profile features sharply angled armrests made from polished steel tubing, creating an architectural silhouette. The use of natural materials, such as the creamy sheepskin cover, softens the industrial framework and adds tactile warmth and visual contrast.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was a master of the Danish Modern movement, renowned for fusing aesthetic clarity with functional craftsmanship. Although primarily associated with wooden furniture and organic forms, the Flag Halyard Chair reflects his versatile and experimental spirit. According to design history, Wegner conceptualized the chair while sitting in a beach lounger during a family vacation, and its form suggests a reclining hammock-like leisure experience rooted in relaxation.

Produced by Getama, a Danish manufacturer located in Gedsted, this version is among the early productions that highlight the company’s close relationship with Wegner. Getama produced many of Wegner’s designs with a consistent focus on quality and long-lasting build standards.

This particular example remains in good vintage condition, with evident signs of use, aged patina, and an honest presentation of wear that enhances its authenticity. The sheepskin is supple and dense, while the fabric headrest is secured by original canvas straps, offering neck support and visual color accentuation. The chair measures approximately 104 cm in width, 115 cm in depth, and 80 cm in height (40.9 x 45.3 x 31.5 inches), with a seat height of roughly 38 cm (15 inches).
