Hans Wegner lounge chairs
This rare pair of Flag Halyard lounge chairs was designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Hans J. Wegner in 1950 and produced by Getama in Denmark. The design represents a bold departure from Wegner’s usual approach rooted in woodworking, instead showcasing his interest in industrial materials and experimental form while maintaining his uncompromising attention to detail and ergonomic integrity.
Each chair features a robust, green-lacquered steel base that provides a stable structure for the hand-woven flagline seat. The flagline, made from tightly twisted natural rope, forms the entire seating surface and backrest, suspended in an angular chrome-plated steel frame. This creates a tensioned, hammock-like seating experience that adapts to the sitter’s body while remaining visually light and sculpturally expressive. A plush, blue cylindrical headrest in fabric, attached with straps, offers neck support, and the addition of curly, brown-and-white sheepskin throws enhances both comfort and warmth, introducing an organic texture in contrast with the industrial frame.
The Flag Halyard Chair is one of Wegner’s few pieces to incorporate metal as a key material and is often viewed as an outlier among his predominantly wooden furniture. It was inspired by a summer holiday by the seaside, where Wegner conceived the idea while reclining in the sand. The result is a chair that blurs the line between design and sculpture, combining Nordic sensibility with avant-garde boldness.
This pair is in good condition, exhibiting small signs of usage and an even patina on the flagline and steel components. The straps, headrests, and sheepskin accents all retain their functionality and visual integrity, with only minor age-related wear.
Dimensions per chair are 106 cm wide (41.7 inches), 120 cm deep (47.2 inches), and 79.5 cm high (31.3 inches). The seat height is 39 cm (15.4 inches).
