Hans Wegner nesting tables
This rare set of nesting tables was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by cabinetmaker Andreas Tuck in Denmark during the 1950s. Exemplifying Wegner’s refined approach to functional design, the set demonstrates his mastery of proportion, detailing, and joinery, all within a modest scale. The three tables nest seamlessly into one another, allowing flexible use and efficient storage, a key feature in Scandinavian modern interiors of the post-war period.
The tables are made from a combination of solid teak and oak, creating a subtle but effective material contrast. The tops are executed in warm, figured teak, known for its rich reddish-brown tone and pronounced grain. The legs and supporting structures are formed in lighter oak, offering strength and balance. The construction is precise, with softly rounded leg profiles and a gently recessed apron, giving the set a light and architectural quality. Each table tapers slightly in leg and top thickness, enhancing the sense of visual delicacy.
Hans J. Wegner was one of the leading figures of 20th-century Danish furniture design. Known for his work with Carl Hansen & Søn and Johannes Hansen, he combined sculptural form with everyday utility. His partnership with Andreas Tuck was marked by a series of small-scale furniture pieces that demonstrated impeccable woodworking and the Danish ethos of ‘form follows function’. This nesting table set, branded beneath with the original Andr. Tuck stamp and the Danish Furniture Makers Control mark, is a well-documented example from this collaboration.
The condition is good vintage, with light signs of wear consistent with age and careful domestic use. Minor surface marks are visible upon close inspection but do not detract from the overall appearance or structural integrity. The patina of the teak surfaces has matured naturally, adding character to the clean lines of the design.
The dimensions of the largest table are 52 cm in width (20.5 inches), 34 cm in depth (13.4 inches), and 48 cm in height (18.9 inches). Each subsequent table nests beneath the other in slightly reduced dimensions, preserving the geometric cohesion of the original grouping.
