Hans Wegner sofa
This is a three-seat sofa, model GE-240, commonly referred to as the “Cigar” sofa, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Getama in Denmark during the 1950s. The design is emblematic of Wegner’s ability to combine structural clarity with sculptural presence, employing solid oak for the frame and original upholstery in a deep red patterned wool with leather piping. The name “Cigar” references the distinctive, softly rounded armrests, which resemble the shape of a cigar and serve as a visual and tactile focal point of the design.
The frame is crafted in solid oak with a natural oiled finish that highlights the grain’s character and contributes to a warm tone. The construction employs vertical spindle supports along the back and angled side stretchers that connect to the front legs in a triangulated, load-bearing configuration. This not only adds visual rhythm but also enhances the piece’s structural integrity. The cushioning is divided into three segments for seat and back, each independently placed and tufted with buttons. The original wool fabric is a textured weave of red and black, contrasted by leather piping, and shows patina and fading consistent with respectful age and use.
Hans Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most influential Danish furniture designers of the 20th century. A cabinetmaker by training and a graduate of the Danish School of Arts and Crafts, he was known for his emphasis on comfort, honest joinery, and expressive natural materials. The GE-240 was among several models he developed in the 1950s for Getama, a firm in Gedsted known for its high-quality upholstered seating and long-term collaboration with Wegner.
The sofa is in good vintage condition, with small signs of usage such as minor wear to the wood and subtle toning of the fabric. The cushions retain their form and are structurally sound, while the frame remains sturdy with no instability. The aged leather piping adds to the authenticity and character of the piece.
