Harald Notini ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp, model 11688, was designed by Harald Notini and produced by Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik in Sweden during the 1950s. Executed in brass and glass, the lamp is a distinctive example of Swedish mid-century lighting design, combining decorative sculptural form with a technically resolved construction intended to produce an even and atmospheric illumination.
The lamp is constructed with a wide frosted glass shade shaped into a soft scalloped profile, resembling an open flower form when viewed from below. The glass has a translucent milky white tone with a fine textured surface, creating a diffused glow and minimizing glare. The shade is mounted around a central brass element consisting of a perforated cylindrical diffuser and a brass ceiling mount. The brass has a warm golden tone and provides a clear contrast to the matte glass surface, emphasizing the lamp’s layered construction.
The perforated brass cylinder functions as both a structural and optical component, concealing the light source while allowing controlled ventilation and a subtle downward light effect through the vertical slots. When illuminated, the lamp produces a balanced ambient light that spreads softly across the ceiling and surrounding space, while the textured glass gives the light a warm, slightly shimmering character. The overall composition reflects the mid-century Scandinavian interest in combining practical lighting performance with decorative sculptural silhouettes.
Harald Notini was one of Sweden’s most important lighting designers of the 20th century, known for developing lamps with strong architectural presence and refined material execution. His work often balanced industrial production with elegant detailing, and many of his designs from the 1940s and 1950s are today considered key examples of Swedish modern lighting. Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik was among Sweden’s leading manufacturers of lighting during the period, producing high-quality fixtures in brass and glass and collaborating with prominent designers to supply both domestic and public interiors.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with minor signs of use consistent with age. The brass components show small surface marks and a light natural patina, while the glass shade remains well preserved with only minor wear.
