Harald Notini ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp, model 11326, was designed by Harald Notini and produced by Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik in Sweden during the 1940s. It is a quintessential example of Scandinavian functionalism, characterized by an emphasis on rational construction, material integrity, and understated elegance.
The fixture is constructed from brass and glass, with a wide, slightly flared circular brass shade that defines the lamp’s architectural presence. The surface of the brass exhibits a naturally aged patina, with fine textural variation that enhances its historical character. Along the perimeter of the brass shade are evenly spaced vertical perforations, which subtly diffuse light outward and add a decorative yet functional touch. The underside is finished with a frosted glass diffuser, held in place by a central brass disc, providing glare-free, evenly distributed light.
The lamp is suspended from a brass rod and conical ceiling canopy, which together reinforce the linear verticality and mid-century proportions of the design. The internal lighting arrangement features a total of nine sockets: six positioned to project light downward through the diffuser, and three directed upward to reflect ambient illumination onto the ceiling. This dual-directional configuration contributes to a layered lighting effect that is both practical and atmospheric.
Harald Notini was a prominent Swedish designer and lighting architect known for blending classical refinement with modernist sensibilities. As artistic director of Böhlmarks Lampfabrik, one of Sweden’s foremost lighting manufacturers, he played a key role in shaping Scandinavian lighting aesthetics during the interwar and postwar periods. Model 11326 reflects Notini’s mastery in balancing technical efficiency with visual clarity, making use of pure geometric forms and material contrasts.
Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik, founded in the late 19th century, was instrumental in the industrial development of electric lighting in Sweden. Under Notini’s direction, the firm produced high-quality functionalist fixtures for both public and domestic interiors, becoming synonymous with Swedish lighting design.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age to the brass surfaces and faint edge wear on the glass. All components remain structurally sound and the fixture operates with its original multi-socket configuration.
The dimensions are 61 cm in diameter and 50 cm in height. In imperial units, this equates to approximately 24 inches wide and 19.7 inches tall. The fixture’s balanced proportion and luminous diffusion make it suitable for central placement in dining rooms, salons, or representative spaces seeking historical Scandinavian design.
