Harald Notini ceiling lamps
Ceiling lamps, model 6051, was designed by Harald Notini and produced by Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik in Sweden during the 1920s – 1930s. It is an exemplary piece from the Swedish Grace movement, characterized by a refined balance between neoclassical ornamentation and emerging functionalist ideals. This lamp demonstrates the transition from decorative historicism to the more streamlined elegance of early modern Scandinavian design.
The structure is composed of patinated brass with a vertically elongated, cylindrical lantern form. The frame encloses a frosted glass shade segmented into five panels by vertical brass supports. These frosted glass surfaces provide soft, diffused light and contribute to the restrained formal expression. The top section of the lamp features five curved arms that arch upward and converge in a fluted brass collar, visually referencing classical forms while remaining pared-down and architectural. The lower ring is finished with five evenly spaced brass spheres, adding visual rhythm and weight to the composition.
The patinated brass has darkened to a warm brown tone with subtle green oxidation in the recesses, creating depth and emphasizing the lamp’s age. The frosted glass is in excellent condition with minor manufacturing irregularities consistent with early 20th-century production. The lamp has retained its original ceiling cup and suspension rod, which integrate harmoniously with the rest of the design.
Harald Notini (1879–1959) was a Swedish architect and designer known for his lighting work, furniture, and decorative interiors. His contributions to the Swedish Grace movement are marked by an architectural sensibility, often balancing ornamental and geometric elements. Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik, established in the late 19th century, was among Sweden’s most prominent lighting manufacturers during this period and was responsible for many significant public and private commissions. Their collaboration produced lighting objects that combined hand-finished detailing with emerging industrial techniques.
This model is a rare example of Swedish Grace lighting that exemplifies the stylistic tendencies of the era—refined verticality, ornamental restraint, and classicizing motifs presented through modern materials and simplified form.
The lamp measures 83 cm in height and 25 cm in diameter, which corresponds to approximately 32.7 inches high and 9.8 inches in diameter. It remains in excellent condition and reflects the high-quality craftsmanship typical of Swedish lighting design between the wars.
