Harald Notini ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model #10166, was designed by Harald Notini and produced by Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik in Sweden. It is a representative example of the Swedish Grace style—a movement that bridged the decorative richness of Art Deco with the functional clarity of early Scandinavian modernism during the 1920s and 1930s. Notini’s work in lighting design reflects an architectural precision combined with refined material detailing, both of which are prominently displayed in this piece.
The lamp features a symmetrical five-arm design, with each arm supporting an upward-facing glass bowl. These bowls are rendered in opaline cream-toned glass that diffuses light with a soft, warm quality. The opaline finish creates an even glow and complements the matte brass surfaces. The glass elements are uniformly shaped with shallow curvature, contributing to the overall sense of order and harmony in the design.
The arms are constructed of browned brass, gently curved in a balanced arc that supports each shade while maintaining open spatial geometry. These arms extend from a central cylindrical column, also in browned brass, that serves as the structural and visual core of the composition. The column terminates at its lower end in a spherical finial—an element that introduces a geometric punctuation and reinforces the Art Deco vocabulary of the piece. The browning of the brass has developed into a subtle patina over time, imparting a sense of historical depth and authenticity.
The design reflects the principles of Swedish Grace through its restrained ornamentation, geometric clarity, and use of luxurious but subdued materials. At the same time, its symmetry, spherical detailing, and vertical structure echo Art Deco influences, making it a transitional piece that unites these stylistic languages.
The condition of the lamp is excellent. The brass surfaces show minor aging and surface patina consistent with its vintage origin, while the glass bowls are intact, without visible cracks or significant blemishes. The overall construction remains solid and true to its original design.
The lamp measures 60 cm in diameter (23.6 inches) and 55 cm in height (21.7 inches), making it suitable for medium-height ceilings where decorative presence and soft, ambient lighting are desired. This model stands as a fine example of Harald Notini’s craftsmanship and the high-quality production of Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik, one of Sweden’s premier lighting manufacturers of the early 20th century.
