Harald Notini table lamp
This very rare table lamp, model 15277, was designed by Harald Notini and produced by Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik in Sweden during the 1940s. The lamp combines brass and elm in a balanced construction, demonstrating the refined material interplay characteristic of Scandinavian lighting design of the period. The large, shallow brass shade features a perforated edge with evenly spaced elongated cutouts, designed to diffuse light both downward and outward while allowing subtle reflections to pass through the slits. This creates a warm, atmospheric illumination that softens the lamp’s strong geometric form.
The stem is crafted from elm, turned into a slender, elongated shape with a tapering profile that enhances the lamp’s vertical balance. The natural grain of the wood introduces a warm organic texture that contrasts with the smooth, reflective brass surfaces. The circular brass base is flat and weighted, ensuring stability, with small rounded feet slightly elevating it from the surface. The underside construction reveals high craftsmanship, typical of Böhlmarks, one of Sweden’s leading lamp manufacturers of the early to mid-20th century.
Harald Notini (1879–1959) was one of Sweden’s most influential lighting designers and worked extensively with Böhlmarks, where he contributed to shaping the company’s distinct aesthetic that merged functionality, elegance, and material clarity. His work often emphasized the dialogue between metals and woods, creating lamps that were both architectural and decorative. Model 15277 belongs to a small group of table lamps where the large brass shade is combined with wooden details, reflecting the transition from functionalism toward the softer mid-century modern idiom.
The lamp remains in excellent vintage condition, with a well-preserved patina on the brass surfaces that testifies to its age, while the elm stem shows minimal wear and retains its rich, natural finish. When illuminated, the two-bulb configuration beneath the shade provides an even, glowing light, enhanced by the warm reflective qualities of the brass.
Dimensions: height 50 cm (19.7 inches), shade diameter 47 cm (18.5 inches).
