Henry Schubell easy chair
This rare easy chair, model MS-6, was designed by Henry Schubell and produced by Madsen & Schubell in Denmark during the 1950s. The chair embodies the mid-century Scandinavian fusion of organic form, comfort, and refined craftsmanship. The solid teak frame displays a warm brown tone with a visible grain structure, providing a sturdy yet elegant support for the sculpted seat and backrest. These are newly reupholstered in natural sheepskin, enhanced by leather-covered buttons that complement the period’s material palette.
The chair’s design is distinguished by a high, softly tapering backrest that integrates seamlessly with a generously sized seat. Outwardly curving, finely carved armrests frame the seating area, blending rounded and angular joinery techniques that achieve both structural strength and visual lightness. The rear legs are subtly splayed, supporting the seat’s inclined posture and ensuring overall stability. The sheepskin upholstery adds tactile softness and visual warmth, enriching the chair’s ergonomic qualities.
Henry Schubell (1906–2001) was a Danish designer closely linked to Madsen & Schubell, where he developed several influential lounge chairs throughout the 1940s and 1950s. His work is recognized for its fluid silhouettes, functional elegance, and well-proportioned forms. The company was noted for its commitment to producing high-quality upholstered furniture during the golden era of Danish modernism.
The chair measures 70 cm in width, 85 cm in depth, and 100 cm in height, with a seat height of 42 cm—approximately 27.6 x 33.5 x 39.4 inches, with a seat height of 16.5 inches. It is in excellent condition, with the original finish preserved on the frame and recently renewed upholstery in natural sheepskin. The joints remain tight and the structure intact.
