Henry W. Klein attrib. reclining chairs
This pair of reclining easy chairs, attributed to Henry W. Klein, was probably produced in Denmark during the 1960s. The design is a compelling example of Scandinavian functionalism, combining comfort, engineering precision, and an expressive sculptural form.
Each chair features a black lacquered tubular steel frame, emphasizing both strength and visual lightness. The construction allows for a smooth reclining mechanism that adjusts the backrest and integrated leg support, offering various positions for relaxation. The armrests are slender and organically shaped, providing ergonomic comfort while maintaining the chair’s clean, architectural profile.
The upholstery has been newly redone in a finely woven grey fabric, adding texture and tonal depth while harmonizing with the industrial character of the frame. The subtle contrast between the matte black steel and the soft neutral textile highlights the modern material balance typical of mid-century Scandinavian design.
Henry W. Klein, who was trained by Finn Juhl and active in Denmark before establishing his own design firm, is known for designs that blend sculptural form with technical refinement. This pair exemplifies his sensitivity to both aesthetics and practicality.
The chairs are in good vintage condition with minor patina on the metal surfaces, consistent with age and use. Fully restored upholstery ensures contemporary comfort while preserving the original proportions and structure.
