Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chair
The rare Sälen easy chair, designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced in the 1950s by OPE Möbler in Sweden, is a distinguished example of mid-century Scandinavian design, merging sculptural woodwork with warm, tactile materials. The chair reflects Kofod-Larsen’s characteristic blend of Danish organic modernism and Swedish craftsmanship, embodying both elegance and ergonomic sensitivity.
The frame is constructed from solid teak and features gracefully contoured lines that define its overall silhouette. The arms transition seamlessly into the rear legs, forming a continuous arc that enhances the chair’s visual fluidity and structural coherence. The front legs are slightly tapered and angled, contributing to the poised, open stance of the design. The teak displays a rich brown coloration with fine grain and a smooth, matte finish, underscoring the material’s natural quality and the precision of its shaping.
The seat and backrest are upholstered in warm caramel-colored leather, offering a tonal contrast to the darker teak. The leather has aged beautifully, developing a soft patina with subtle surface markings and tonal shifts that emphasize the organic character of the material. The upholstery is minimally detailed, allowing the quality of the leather and the contours of the frame to remain visually dominant.
Measuring 80 cm in width, 77 cm in depth, 75 cm in height, and with a seat height of 39 cm (approximately 31.5 × 30.3 × 29.5 inches with a seat height of 15.4 inches), the Sälen chair offers generous proportions without visual heaviness. Its low-slung profile and angled back make it suitable for lounge settings, reading areas, or as a statement piece within a refined modern interior.
Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a prominent Danish designer renowned for his sculptural seating and sensitivity to form and material. He frequently collaborated with both Danish and Swedish manufacturers during the mid-20th century, and his work for OPE represents a synthesis of his design language with Swedish production expertise.
OPE Möbler (Olof Perssons Fåtöljindustri) in Jönköping was known for producing high-quality upholstered furniture during the height of the Scandinavian design movement. Their partnership with Kofod-Larsen resulted in several now-iconic seating models, of which the Sälen is one of the most refined and collectible.
This example remains in very good vintage condition, with the teak frame structurally sound and the leather upholstery showing wear consistent with careful use. The Sälen chair captures the timeless appeal of Scandinavian craftsmanship and remains a sought-after piece among collectors of 20th-century design.
