Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chair
This is a rare easy chair, model Sälen, designed by Danish architect and designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden during the 1950s. The chair features a frame crafted from solid teak with a sculptural form characterized by angular lines, gently reclined posture, and precisely faceted armrests. The dark reddish-brown teak contrasts elegantly with the black leather upholstery, which includes both the fixed seat shell and a separate loose seat cushion. The leather presents a subtle sheen and exhibits signs of patina and natural wear consistent with age and careful use, confirming the chair’s authenticity and vintage character.
Ib Kofod-Larsen, active primarily during the mid-20th century, is noted for his refined contributions to Scandinavian modernism, often blending Danish craftsmanship with international appeal. He developed a close collaboration with several Swedish and Danish manufacturers, among them OPE Möbler, known for producing high-quality modern furniture with a focus on clean lines and superior materials. The Sälen model is one of Kofod-Larsen’s most expressive Swedish works, demonstrating his talent for harmonizing organic comfort with geometric clarity.
Stylistically, the chair belongs to the Scandinavian mid-century modern movement, emphasizing functional design, warmth of materials, and minimalist elegance. The construction prioritizes both comfort and visual lightness, with the tilted backrest and splayed legs enhancing the overall dynamism of the form.
The dimensions are 80 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 72 cm in height, with a seat height of 39 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 31.5 inches wide, 31.5 inches deep, 28.3 inches high, and a seat height of 15.4 inches.
