Information

This is a rare easy chair model “Sälen” designed by Danish architect and designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden during the 1950s. The chair features a sculptural teak frame combined with original black leather upholstery, showcasing the elegant proportions and tactile materiality characteristic of Scandinavian modernism. The silhouette is defined by sweeping, angled armrests that merge seamlessly with the slender rear legs, forming a dynamic, forward-thrusting profile. The backrest is gently curved and fully upholstered, offering ergonomic support and visual continuity, while the loose seat cushion provides additional comfort and emphasizes the chair’s crafted quality.

Ib Kofod-Larsen was an influential figure in the Scandinavian design movement, known for his refined, understated style and his preference for natural materials, especially teak and leather. His work often reflected a strong sense of architectural clarity, prioritizing structure and balance without sacrificing softness and comfort. Kofod-Larsen collaborated with numerous manufacturers across Scandinavia, and his pieces were especially well received in Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom during the mid-20th century.

OPE Möbler, the Swedish producer of this model, was known for its collaborations with leading designers of the era and for its commitment to high-quality craftsmanship and modernist aesthetics. Their production in the 1950s helped shape Sweden’s design identity through elegant and functional furniture made primarily in fine woods such as teak and rosewood.

This example remains in very good vintage condition. The teak frame has developed a warm patina with visible grain and color variation, while the black leather upholstery shows minor wear consistent with age but retains its integrity and softness. The structure is stable, and all joints are secure.
