Information

This rare easy chair, model “Samsö”, was designed by Danish architect Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden during the 1950s. It embodies the designer’s signature approach to organic form, superior material quality, and functional elegance. The Samsö chair is a low-slung, generous lounge seat with a visually light frame that belies its structural robustness. The expressive curves of the frame are precisely joined, showcasing Kofod-Larsen’s dedication to craftsmanship and comfort.

The frame is made of solid rosewood, displaying a rich and varied grain with dark, linear figuring that adds visual rhythm to the design. The wood is finished with a deep, satin luster that emphasizes its natural density and warmth. The armrests are delicately sculpted and taper toward the front, with transitions at the joints smoothed to an almost seamless continuity. The back legs are subtly flared to provide both visual movement and additional structural stability.

The cushions are upholstered in original brown leather, which has developed a deep and even patina over time. The seat and backrest cushions are generously filled and slightly overstuffed, offering both support and relaxation. The leather exhibits gentle creasing and surface wear consistent with age, contributing to the character of the piece without compromising its usability.

Ib Kofod-Larsen was one of the central figures of Scandinavian mid-century furniture design, known for his international appeal and refined interpretations of modernist principles. Though Danish by birth, he frequently collaborated with Swedish manufacturers such as OPE, where he was able to execute designs that fused Danish modernism with Swedish material sensibilities. His work often emphasized clarity of line and ergonomic sophistication, as seen in the Samsö chair.

This chair is in good vintage condition with signs of wear consistent with its age. There are minor scuffs to the wood and some darkening and softness in the leather upholstery, all of which contribute to a desirable, well-aged surface character. The construction remains firm and stable.

Dimensions are: Width 71 cm (28 inches), Depth 72 cm (28.3 inches), Height 72 cm (28.3 inches), Seat Height 39 cm (15.4 inches).
