Information

This very rare easy chair with matching stool, model U56, also known as the Elizabeth model, was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen in 1956. The set was produced by Christensen & Larsen in Denmark and represents one of the most celebrated seating designs of Scandinavian mid-century modern furniture. The model gained its widely used name after Queen Elizabeth II purchased a pair in 1958, which firmly established its international recognition and historical importance.

The chair is constructed with a solid rosewood frame, characterized by warm brown tones and a pronounced, lively grain. The structure features gently tapering legs and elegantly curved armrests that extend forward in a sculptural manner, forming an integrated part of the frame. The proportions are carefully balanced, with a low seating position and a slightly reclined back that emphasizes comfort while maintaining a light visual presence. The matching stool follows the same construction principles, with a compact, rounded form that complements the chair both functionally and aesthetically.

Both the chair and the stool are upholstered in original black leather. The leather shows natural variations in tone, with areas of lighter wear and darker saturation that contribute to a rich and authentic patina. The upholstery retains its suppleness, with visible creases and surface wear consistent with age and use, enhancing the material character rather than detracting from it. The condition is described as excellent vintage condition, with signs of use that are evenly distributed and visually harmonious. The rosewood frame shows minor wear consistent with age, while remaining structurally sound and well preserved.

Ib Kofod-Larsen was known for his refined approach to comfort-driven modernism, often combining organic forms with high-quality materials. His collaboration with Christensen & Larsen resulted in several iconic designs, of which the Elizabeth chair is among the most significant. The model exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century ideals through its combination of craftsmanship, ergonomic consideration, and restrained elegance. A matching sofa from the same series is also available, allowing for a cohesive seating arrangement.

The dimensions of the chair are 79 cm in width, 74 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 31.1 x 29.1 x 28.0 inches. The seat height is 35 cm, or about 13.8 inches. The stool measures 57 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 38 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 22.4 x 17.7 x 15.0 inches, with a seat height of 38 cm, or about 15.0 inches.
