Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chair
The U56 easy chair with matching stool, commonly referred to as the “Elizabeth” model, was designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by cabinetmaker Christensen & Larsen in 1956. This model represents one of the most refined expressions of Danish mid-century modernism, celebrated for its sculptural form, material integrity, and ergonomic precision.
The chair’s frame is constructed from solid rosewood, a material favored for its strength, grain complexity, and depth of tone. The rosewood has developed a rich, lustrous patina over time, enhancing the natural variation and warmth of the wood. The design is defined by a seamless integration of armrest and leg, executed through precise joinery and careful contouring. This sculptural gesture exemplifies the organic fluency typical of Kofod-Larsen’s approach and the broader Danish design movement of the era. The original upholstery is in black leather, which remains in good vintage condition, exhibiting a consistent patina and subtle surface creasing, indicative of its age and careful use.
The accompanying stool mirrors the chair’s visual language, featuring similarly curved legs and a low, padded seat that complements the ergonomic angle of the chair. Together, the pair achieves a visual and functional harmony that enhances both comfort and composition.
The model became internationally known as the “Elizabeth” chair following Queen Elizabeth II’s purchase of a pair during a 1958 visit to Denmark. This association contributed to its elevated status within the canon of modern Scandinavian furniture design.
Ib Kofod-Larsen, active throughout the mid-20th century, was renowned for his ability to balance bold architectural gestures with a soft, tactile materiality. His collaboration with Christensen & Larsen, one of Denmark’s most skilled cabinetmaking firms, resulted in a number of high-quality designs that emphasized both craftsmanship and clarity of form.
The dimensions of the chair are 79 cm wide, 74 cm deep, and 71 cm high, with a seat height of 35 cm. The stool measures 57 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 38 cm in height, with a matching seat height of 38 cm. This set stands as a quintessential example of Danish design, distinguished by its elegance, integrity of materials, and historical relevance.
