Information

This rare pair of easy chairs, model Sälen, was designed by Danish designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden during the 1950s. The chairs are a notable example of Scandinavian mid-century modernism, combining sculptural form, refined materials, and ergonomic considerations.

The frames are constructed from solid teak, showcasing rich reddish-brown tones and an expressive grain pattern. The wood is sculpted into a dynamic angular silhouette with pronounced splayed legs and gently curved armrests, creating a visually light yet structurally stable form. The rear legs extend seamlessly upward to support the angled backrest, emphasizing the continuous flow of the frame and highlighting Kofod-Larsen’s talent for organic construction and joinery.

The seating elements are upholstered in original black leather, which exhibits a natural patina with surface creasing, wear marks, and a softened texture developed through use. The leather remains intact and supple, contributing to the chairs’ authentic vintage character. The leather upholstery is molded into the seat shell and paired with separate seat cushions for additional comfort and support.

Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was one of the leading Danish designers of the post-war era, known for his collaborations with both Danish and Swedish manufacturers. His designs emphasized clean lines, material integrity, and comfort, often realized in fine woods and leather. The Sälen model exemplifies his ability to balance sculptural aesthetics with functional ease, and its Swedish production context reflects the cross-border design collaborations characteristic of the era.

The chairs are in good vintage condition, with visible signs of usage including light scratches, patina on the leather, and minor wear to the teak surfaces, all consistent with age and use.

The dimensions for each chair are 80 cm wide, 75 cm deep, and 75 cm high, with a seat height of 39 cm. These correspond to approximately 31.5 inches in width, 29.5 inches in depth, 29.5 inches in height, and 15.4 inches in seat height.
