Information

This rare pair of easy chairs, model 4346, was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark during the 1950s. The design reflects Kofod-Larsen’s sculptural and organic approach to seating, combining fine materials with fluid lines and ergonomic form.

The chairs feature solid teak frames with warm reddish-brown hues and fine, straight grain. The armrests are distinguished by gentle curves and an upward taper, sculpted from solid wood with architectural clarity that defines the chairs’ visual character. The legs are sharply angled yet slender, contributing to a lightweight appearance while ensuring structural stability.

The seats and backs have been newly reupholstered in wool fabric with a two-tone palette: neutral beige on the inner frame and backrest, and contrasting mustard yellow for the seat cushions. The upholstery is tightly tailored, with the seat cushion slightly raised and inset into the shell, enhancing the depth of the chair. This separation between frame and upholstery creates a layered composition emphasizing the form.

Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a Danish architect and designer celebrated for his mastery of form and work across multiple materials. His designs gained international recognition in the mid-20th century and were produced by leading manufacturers such as Fritz Hansen, Faarup Møbelfabrik, and Christensen & Larsen. His work is noted for subtle curves, organic proportions, and seamless joinery.

Fritz Hansen, established in 1872, is one of Denmark’s foremost furniture producers, known for collaborations with leading 20th-century designers. Their production of Kofod-Larsen’s works in the 1950s represents a high point of post-war Scandinavian design.

This pair is in excellent restored condition. The teak frames are well preserved with minimal wear, and the new wool upholstery is professionally executed. Each chair measures 81 cm wide, 75 cm deep, and 77 cm high, with a seat height of 37 cm, approximately 31.9 inches wide, 29.5 inches deep, 30.3 inches high, and a seat height of 14.6 inches.
