Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model Kandidaten, was designed by Danish architect and designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden during the 1950s. The design exemplifies Kofod-Larsen’s modernist approach, emphasizing proportion, form, and material harmony. The chairs feature an open, elegant teak frame with dynamic geometry, paired with original button-tufted black imitation leather cushions that reflect the refined aesthetic of mid-century Scandinavian seating.
The frame is crafted from solid teak with softly rounded, sculptural forms. The arms taper outward with a slender rise toward the handrest, while the rear legs and angled backrest create architectural tension and visual rhythm. The backrest consists of three wide vertical slats recessed and integrated seamlessly into the seat and leg structure, highlighting continuity and craftsmanship. Tapered legs and structural side stretchers provide stability and visual balance.
The cushions are upholstered in original black imitation leather, featuring deep button tufting and piped edges that add texture and definition. The seating is generously proportioned yet maintains a slender profile, balancing comfort with a light and airy presence. The teak frames display a rich patina, while the upholstery shows minor age-appropriate wear without significant damage, preserving the vintage character.
Ib Kofod-Larsen was known for a sophisticated and understated design language, with many pieces produced for Scandinavian and international manufacturers. His work is noted for architectural clarity and ergonomic refinement. The Kandidaten chair is a distinguished example of his Swedish production collaborations. OPE Möbler, based in Jönköping, Sweden, was a leading furniture producer in the postwar period, recognized for quality craftsmanship and design innovation.
