Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model DP 9, was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and manufactured by Christensen & Larsen in Denmark in 1950. The chairs exemplify Kofod-Larsen’s distinctive approach to form and ergonomics, characterized by his refined sense of proportion and tactile materiality. Each chair features a striking sculptural silhouette with a gently curved seat and winged backrest, subtly integrating armrests into a unified leather shell.
The construction pairs a solid rosewood frame with the original patinated cognac-brown leather upholstery. The rosewood legs are crafted with tapering cylindrical and angular forms, arranged in a triangular support system that emphasizes the visual tension between strength and delicacy. The warm reddish-brown tone and rich grain pattern of the rosewood complement the natural wear and tonality of the leather, which shows signs of age and use consistent with vintage condition.
Ib Kofod-Larsen was an influential Danish designer who collaborated with leading mid-century furniture makers across Scandinavia and abroad. Known for his elegant and functionalist aesthetic, he often worked with high-quality woods and leathers, creating pieces that balanced modernist simplicity with organic softness. Christensen & Larsen was a Copenhagen-based workshop recognized for its craftsmanship and for producing works for major exhibitions.
These DP 9 chairs were originally presented at The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition at the Designmuseum Danmark in 1950, a significant venue for Danish designers to showcase experimental and artisanal furniture. The model stands as a refined example of Danish modernist design, with a structural lightness that supports the body’s contours without compromising visual presence.
The dimensions of each chair are 60 cm wide, 68 cm deep, and 76.5 cm high (approximately 23.6 x 26.8 x 30.1 inches), with a seat height of 39 cm (15.4 inches). The overall condition is good vintage, exhibiting expected patina and signs of wear, particularly in the leather. The chairs retain the branded Christensen & Larsen maker’s mark.
