Information

This is a very rare and refined pair of easy chairs with matching stools, model U56—also known as the “Elizabeth” chairs—designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Ib Kofod-Larsen. The model was first introduced in 1956 and is regarded as one of Kofod-Larsen’s most iconic contributions to mid-century Scandinavian seating design.

Each chair features a delicately sculpted teak frame with sweeping organic curves, showcasing the designer’s skill in combining comfort with elegance. The teak has aged beautifully, displaying deep reddish-brown hues with rich grain and a matte luster typical of finely patinated mid-century hardwoods. The structure is open and angular, with refined armrests that extend outward in a fluid motion and meet the backrest with a seamless, architectural transition.

The seat and backrest have been newly reupholstered in Kvadrat fabric, pairing a neutral-toned main textile with teal-blue seat cushions. This textile composition both respects the design’s historical context and lends a contemporary freshness. The seat is deeply recessed, offering an enveloping, comfortable experience, while the compact ottomans echo the chair’s design language in reduced scale. Each stool features the same elegant joinery and curvature, making the ensemble cohesive and visually harmonious.

Produced by Christensen & Larsen in Denmark, this set reflects the quality craftsmanship and precision associated with the firm’s collaborations with prominent Danish designers. Kofod-Larsen’s work stands out for its international appeal, and the U56 model gained its “Elizabeth” nickname after Queen Elizabeth II reportedly acquired a pair during a visit to Denmark.

These pieces are in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of age and use. The frames have been carefully preserved and the upholstery renewed with high-quality contemporary materials, ensuring long-term durability while maintaining historical authenticity.
