Information

This pair of easy chairs, model “Samsö” was designed by the renowned Danish architect and designer Ib Kofod-Larsen in the 1950s. Known for his sculptural precision and refined proportions, Kofod-Larsen frequently worked with rich hardwoods and leather upholstery to create furniture that emphasized comfort without sacrificing form.

The chairs are constructed in rosewood, a premium hardwood prized for its strong character and deep reddish-brown coloration. The frames are finely shaped, with slightly curved rear legs and a continuous arm and back support that demonstrates Kofod-Larsen’s sensitivity to organic lines and joinery. The armrests taper elegantly into the vertical supports, highlighting the designer’s preference for visually light yet structurally strong design.

The seating features original brown leather upholstery, aged into a warm patinated surface that displays gentle creases and signs of usage. The cushions are generously filled and softly structured, contributing to the inviting and comfortable seating experience. The contrast between the polished rosewood frame and the lived-in quality of the leather offers both visual richness and tactile depth.

Produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden, the chairs reflect the productive collaboration between Danish designers and Swedish manufacturers during the height of the Scandinavian modern movement. OPE, known for its precise joinery and craftsmanship, produced several of Kofod-Larsen’s designs during the mid-20th century. This particular model, while rare, is representative of his broader body of work, which blends Danish sensibilities with international appeal.

Both chairs are in good vintage condition, with visible signs of wear consistent with age, particularly to the leather surfaces. The patina enhances the authenticity and character of the pieces, and the structural integrity of the wood frames remains intact and stable.

These chairs exemplify mid-century Scandinavian design through their material integrity, ergonomic elegance, and sculptural clarity, standing as a testament to Kofod-Larsen’s legacy in modern furniture.
