Information

This rare pair of Sälen easy chairs was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden. As one of Kofod-Larsen’s most celebrated designs, the Sälen chair exemplifies the Danish designer’s mastery in creating organic, sculptural forms that balance comfort, elegance, and material richness.

Each chair features a solid teak frame, notable for its fluid, almost animal-like silhouette that gives the model its evocative name. The wood has a deep, reddish-brown hue, with beautifully exposed grain that complements the soft curves and architectural angles of the construction. The armrests are particularly striking—broad and sculpted with an inward sweep—designed to provide both visual rhythm and ergonomic support.

The chairs are upholstered in their original black leather, which has developed a handsome patina over time. The leather remains supple and structurally sound, showing light creasing and surface variation consistent with careful vintage use. The upholstery is tailored with clean, uninterrupted lines, allowing the natural texture and sheen of the material to define the aesthetic. The wide, gently reclined backrests and generously padded seat cushions provide a comfortable seating experience, further enhanced by the softly canted rear legs and open sides, which give the chairs a floating, airy presence.

The teak frames are in very good vintage condition, with only minor marks and a consistent finish that enhances the sculptural quality of the design. The joinery is seamless, and the transitions between components are smooth and carefully finished, reflecting the high standards of craftsmanship maintained by OPE Möbler during the height of Scandinavian modernism.

Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a prolific Danish designer whose work is defined by graceful silhouettes, organic transitions, and a sensitive approach to materials. His designs—particularly the Sälen—are widely regarded for their enduring comfort and timeless visual language.
