Information

The model U56 easy chairs with accompanying stools, designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen in 1956 and crafted by the Danish cabinetmaker Christensen & Larsen, represent a hallmark of Scandinavian mid-century furniture design. Known popularly as the “Elizabeth” chairs, the model gained its iconic name following Queen Elizabeth II’s acquisition of a pair in 1958, a purchase that propelled them to international recognition and elevated their status within design history.

The chairs are distinguished by their sculptural teak frames, which exhibit a highly refined organic form. The armrests curve seamlessly into the structure, reflecting an integration of form and function that is characteristic of Kofod-Larsen’s approach to design. The frame is marked by precisely executed joinery and slender, tapering legs, which together demonstrate the meticulous craftsmanship for which Christensen & Larsen was known. The chairs have been newly reupholstered in a fine wool textile, featuring a light grey tone for the outer surfaces and a contrasting teal for the seat cushions, providing both visual interest and a modernized finish that respects the original aesthetic.

The accompanying stools share the same design language, with gently contoured teak legs and upholstered seats that match the chairs in material and palette. Their form complements the chairs both visually and ergonomically, enhancing the usability and harmony of the set.

The teak wood used in the frames has developed a deep, rich patina, indicative of its age and quality. The overall condition of the set is excellent vintage, with only minor signs of wear that are consistent with careful use and time. The upholstery is recently updated and remains in pristine condition.

These pieces are well-documented in the canonical publication “Dansk Møbelkunst gennem 40 aar,” volume 4 (1957–1966), edited by Grete Jalk and published in Copenhagen in 1987, appearing on pages 12–13 and 48–49. This inclusion underscores their importance within the canon of Danish modern design and affirms their historical and aesthetic significance.
