Ib Kofod-Larsen Elizabeth easy chair
This very rare easy chair, model U56, commonly known as the Elizabeth chair, was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by cabinetmaker Christensen & Larsen in Denmark in 1956. A quintessential example of Danish Modern design, the chair reflects Kofod-Larsen’s emphasis on refined craftsmanship and organic elegance. The frame is constructed from solid teak, featuring sculptural armrests that curve outward gracefully, paired with tapered legs that lend the piece an airy, light appearance. These design elements enhance the chair’s overall elegance, providing a balanced and sophisticated silhouette.
The ergonomic shell of the chair is upholstered in its original black leather, offering a soft and supportive seating experience. The seat cushion is loose, which adds comfort while complementing the structured form of the chair. The black leather has developed a beautiful aged character over time, with natural creasing and minor signs of wear that contribute to its vintage appeal. The chair’s design is also notable for its thoughtful attention to ergonomics, with the curves of the seat and backrest providing excellent support.
This model earned its nickname, the Elizabeth chair, after Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited Denmark in 1958 and acquired a pair of these chairs. This royal association greatly enhanced the chair’s reputation, making it one of Kofod-Larsen’s most celebrated and sought-after designs. The graceful curves, impeccable joinery, and timeless appeal of the chair have made it a classic example of mid-century Danish furniture design.
In terms of condition, the chair remains in very good vintage condition, with minimal signs of age-related wear. The teak frame has developed a rich patina, and the joints are sturdy and well-preserved, reflecting the quality craftsmanship for which Christensen & Larsen is known. The original leather upholstery shows some natural creasing and minor wear, consistent with its age and use, but it retains its overall elegance and charm.
The dimensions of the chair are as follows: a width of 78 cm (30.7 inches), a depth of 72 cm (28.3 inches), and a height of 72 cm (28.3 inches). The seat height is 35 cm (13.8 inches), making it a comfortable and well-proportioned seating option suitable for a variety of interiors.
