Information

This very rare pair of easy chairs, model U56, also known as the Elizabeth model, was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen in 1956 and produced by Christensen & Larsen in Denmark. The model holds a significant place in Scandinavian furniture history and received its widely used name after Queen Elizabeth II purchased a pair during a visit to Denmark in 1958, an event that brought the chair international recognition.

The chairs are constructed with solid rosewood frames, displaying warm brown tones and a clearly defined, expressive grain. The frames are characterized by gently tapering legs and sculpted armrests that extend forward with a subtle outward curve, creating a light yet stable structure. The overall form is compact and low, with a softly reclined backrest and generous seat proportions that emphasize comfort without compromising visual balance. The design reflects a careful integration of structure and upholstery, where the wooden frame both supports and visually frames the seating shell.

The upholstery is executed in original dark red or burgundy leather. The leather surfaces show natural variations in tone and texture, with areas of lighter wear and deeper coloration that have developed over time. This patina is consistent across both chairs and contributes to their authenticity and material depth. The leather remains supple, with visible creasing and surface marks that are typical for well-preserved vintage leather. The rosewood frames show minor signs of use, including small surface marks, while remaining structurally sound and well maintained.

Ib Kofod-Larsen was known for his refined approach to modern furniture design, combining organic forms with a strong focus on ergonomics and material quality. His collaboration with Christensen & Larsen resulted in several important mid-century designs, and the U56 stands out as one of his most accomplished works. The chairs exemplify Scandinavian mid-century modern principles through their restrained elegance, emphasis on craftsmanship, and thoughtful balance between comfort and form.

The pair is in excellent vintage condition, with signs of use consistent with age and careful long-term ownership. Both chairs present a cohesive appearance, with matching materials, finish, and patina.

The dimensions of each chair are 79 cm in width, 74 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 31.1 inches wide, 29.1 inches deep, and 28.0 inches high. The seat height is approximately 35 cm, or about 13.8 inches.
