Ilmari Tapiovaara coffee table

Information

This rare coffee or side table was designed by Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara and produced by Laukaan Puu in Finland during the 1950s. The piece exemplifies Tapiovaara’s dedication to vernacular materials and elemental, modular construction, translated into a refined modernist design language.

The table has a square form and a low, visually grounded profile. Its top consists of three broad solid pine planks, separated by shallow gaps that emphasize the linear rhythm and natural texture of the wood. The pine is finished in a warm honey-toned stain, accentuating the characteristic grain and knotting of Nordic timber. The surface is subtly textured, revealing a minimal finishing approach that enhances the wood’s inherent rustic qualities.

The base comprises two solid block legs aligned flush with the tabletop and running the full width of the plank arrangement, forming a strong T-shaped structure. This design ensures stability while maintaining a monolithic, sculptural presence. The geometry is simple and bold, focusing on volume and proportion rather than decorative detail.

Stamped on the underside with the “Laukaan Puu” maker’s mark and “Tapiovaara Design” designation, the table’s provenance is clear. It is in very good vintage condition, showing only light surface wear consistent with age and use, and no structural damage, retaining its original finish and integrity.

Ilmari Tapiovaara was a leading figure in postwar Finnish design, renowned for blending functionalism with regional craft traditions. Trained as an interior architect, he collaborated on numerous furniture and interior projects, often drawing inspiration from Finnish rural heritage while applying modernist rigor and efficiency. This table embodies those values through its honest use of materials, straightforward construction, and direct aesthetic.

Laukaan Puu was a significant Finnish manufacturer of the mid-20th century, known for producing key Tapiovaara designs and emphasizing domestic timber such as pine. Their work played an important role in promoting Scandinavian modernism rooted in national craftsmanship.

The table measures 70 cm in both width and depth, with a height of 23 cm, corresponding to approximately 27.6 inches square and 9.1 inches high.
