Information

This rare red Art Deco vase was designed by Ivar Ålenius Björk and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1930s. The form consists of three cylindrical tubes of varying heights, each cut at an angle, joined together on a round base. The design is strikingly architectural, with its vertical composition and slanted openings creating a sense of rhythm and upward movement. The vivid red enamel surface gives the vase a bold and modern presence, setting it apart from the more common brass examples by Ålenius Björk.

Ivar Ålenius Björk (1905–1978) was a Swedish sculptor and designer whose works in metal, particularly for Ystad Metall, represent some of the finest examples of Swedish Art Deco. While his sculptural work includes public commissions and bronze portraits, his design objects—such as candlesticks and vases—are admired for their clarity of form and modernist elegance. His pieces often combine functionality with sculptural expression, and this vase exemplifies his ability to transform simple geometric elements into dynamic compositions.

Ystad Metall, founded in the late 19th century in southern Sweden, was one of the country’s leading producers of decorative metalwork throughout the early and mid-20th century. The company became renowned for its collaborations with prominent designers, producing works in brass, bronze, and enameled metal that combined craftsmanship with contemporary design movements such as Art Deco. Objects from Ystad Metall are widely collected today and are considered benchmarks of Scandinavian decorative arts.

This vase captures the essence of Art Deco with its streamlined geometry, symmetry, and bold use of color. The choice of red enamel emphasizes modernity and gives the object a strong decorative character while maintaining the clean, sculptural qualities of its form. It reflects both the international Art Deco movement and the Scandinavian approach to material refinement and balanced proportion.

The vase is in good vintage condition with minor signs of use consistent with age. Its dimensions are 31 cm in height and 8 cm in diameter (approximately 12.2 x 3.1 inches).
