Ivar Ålenius Björk vase
This rare Art Deco vase was designed by Ivar Ålenius-Björk and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1930s. The form consists of three cylindrical brass tubes of varying heights, each with an angled opening, joined together on a circular base. The staggered arrangement creates a vertical rhythm, while the angled cuts soften the geometry, giving the piece a sense of movement and sculptural depth. The polished brass surface has developed a warm patina, with light traces of age consistent with its vintage condition.
Ivar Ålenius-Björk (1905–1978) was a Swedish sculptor and designer best known for his work in bronze and brass. His designs for Ystad Metall during the 1920s and 1930s remain among the most celebrated examples of Swedish Art Deco metalwork. Although he later became well known as a sculptor of public works, his early design work included lighting, candlesticks, and decorative vessels, all distinguished by a balance of sculptural clarity and functional utility. One of his most iconic works is the “Lily” candlestick, which has become a symbol of Scandinavian decorative arts from the period.
Ystad Metall, founded in the late 19th century in southern Sweden, was a leading producer of decorative brass and bronze objects throughout the early and mid-20th century. The company collaborated with some of Sweden’s foremost designers, producing objects that combined traditional craftsmanship with modern stylistic trends, particularly Art Deco. Their work is recognized for its quality and elegance, contributing significantly to the international reputation of Scandinavian design.
This vase represents both the Art Deco aesthetic and the Scandinavian approach to form. The emphasis on clean lines, symmetry, and refined proportions reflects the international Art Deco style, while the restrained use of ornament and focus on material quality align with Swedish design traditions. It is both decorative and architectural in character, embodying the interplay between sculpture and utility.
The vase is in excellent vintage condition, with minor signs of use consistent with its age. Its dimensions are 19 cm in height and 6.5 cm in diameter (approximately 7.5 x 2.6 inches).
