Ivar Johnsson urn
This rare urn, known as the Faun urn, was designed by the Swedish sculptor Ivar Johnsson and produced by Näfveqvarns Bruk in Sweden. The model was originally designed in 1921 and gained international recognition when it was exhibited at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1925, an event that brought Scandinavian design into broader international attention. The piece is executed in cast iron, a material favored by Näfveqvarn for its durability and ability to capture fine sculptural detail.
The urn is decorated with figural reliefs depicting fauns, mythological woodland creatures associated with music, revelry, and nature, rendered here with a strong classical influence. The handles are formed in a scroll-like shape, integrated with stylized faces, creating a sense of architectural gravitas and sculptural drama. Its surface shows an aged patina with variations of dark tones and rust traces, consistent with its material and age, which add depth and authenticity to the piece.
Ivar Johnsson (1885–1970) was a prominent Swedish sculptor, trained in Paris and strongly influenced by classical and monumental traditions. His works often combine mythological or allegorical themes with a sense of modern clarity and proportion. The Faun urn is an example of his skill in adapting sculptural language to decorative arts, bridging the boundary between utility and high art.
Näfveqvarns Bruk, founded in the 17th century, was Sweden’s leading foundry for architectural and decorative cast iron. During the early 20th century, it collaborated with some of the foremost architects and designers of the time, including Gunnar Asplund, Carl Hörvik, and Ivar Johnsson. Their works ranged from functional architectural fittings to sculptural decorative objects, which are today regarded as landmarks in Swedish design history.
The urn is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and surface wear consistent with its age and material. Its dimensions are 45 cm in width, 31 cm in depth, and 38 cm in height (approximately 17.7 x 12.2 x 15 inches). This piece stands as an important example of Swedish decorative cast iron from the interwar period, combining mythological imagery, sculptural form, and artisanal craftsmanship.
