Karl Hultström pen holders
Rare set of three Art Deco pen holders or ashtrays designed by Karl Hultström and produced by GAB (Guldsmedsaktiebolaget) in Sweden during the 1930s.
Executed in bronze, the three vessels share the same distinctive architectural language while differing in scale and decoration. Each has a compact, cubic form articulated by vertical panels with sculpted reliefs of stylised human figures. The figures are elongated and elegantly modelled, their simplified bodies and rhythmic poses reflecting the classical influence and streamlined aesthetic characteristic of Scandinavian Art Deco.
The contrast between the figurative reliefs and the restrained geometric surfaces gives the pieces a particularly sculptural quality. Fine linear detailing along the lower edges and behind several of the figures further emphasises their architectural character.
Originally conceived as functional desk accessories, the vessels could be used as pen holders, small ashtrays or containers. Displayed together, the graduated dimensions and variations in the relief decoration create a striking ensemble, while each piece also works independently as a small sculptural object.
The bronze has developed a rich, naturally varied patina, ranging from deep brown to areas of green oxidation, particularly around the recessed reliefs. This surface variation accentuates the modelling of the figures and gives the set considerable depth and character.
Produced by GAB, one of Sweden’s important manufacturers of decorative metalwork, the set is a fine example of Swedish interwar design combining functionality, classical figuration and Art Deco geometry.
Good vintage condition with small signs of use and naturally developed patina consistent with age.
