Josef Frank candlestick
This rare and early candlestick was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. Crafted entirely from brass, the piece exemplifies Frank’s signature combination of functional utility and expressive, organic form. Departing from the rigid geometry typical of much mid-century design, the candlestick features fluid, hand-wrought curves that give it a lyrical and whimsical quality.
The structure comprises six candle holders, each supported by slender, arched brass arms that rise vertically and curve outward with graceful asymmetry. These arms emanate from a central stem and are balanced by three looping scrolls at the base, which provide both visual counterpoint and stable support. The flowing brass lines and ornamental loops embody Frank’s broader design philosophy, aiming to soften modernism through naturalistic and humanistic gestures.
The brass surface has developed a warm, natural patina, with visible oxidation inside the candle sockets and minor surface marks consistent with age. The candlestick remains structurally sound and retains its full sculptural integrity.
Josef Frank (1885–1967) was an Austrian-born architect and designer who emigrated to Sweden in the 1930s, becoming a central figure in Swedish modern design. Collaborating closely with Estrid Ericson at Svenskt Tenn, he introduced a softer, more eclectic approach to modernism, incorporating botanical motifs, rich materials, and sinuous lines. While his lighting and metalwork are less widely known than his textiles and furniture, they are highly regarded for their artistry and subtle expressiveness.
This candlestick was produced by Svenskt Tenn, the Stockholm-based interior design firm and manufacturer founded in 1924, known for its enduring collaboration with Frank and its influential role in shaping Swedish interior aesthetics throughout the 20th century.
The dimensions are 31 centimeters in diameter and 23 centimeters in height (approximately 12.2 by 9.1 inches).
