Josef Frank candlestick

This brass candlestick, titled “The Knot of Friendship” was designed by Josef Frank in 1938 and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden. The design features three elegantly curved brass arms that intertwine at the center, forming a sculptural and flowing knot. Each arm extends outward to hold a candle, with a small drip plate surrounding each holder, combining functionality with artistic expression.

Josef Frank (1885–1967), an Austrian-Swedish architect and designer, played a pivotal role in modernist and Scandinavian design. After relocating to Sweden in the 1930s, he became a leading figure at Svenskt Tenn, developing a distinctive style that balanced functionalism with organic, nature-inspired forms and decorative motifs. His work softened the rigid geometries of early modernism through fluid, three-dimensional compositions.

This candlestick exemplifies Frank’s skill in merging form and function, utilizing brass to create a dynamic yet harmonious structure. The knot motif symbolizes unity and friendship, reflecting Frank’s interest in timeless, symbolic design elements. Over time, the piece has developed a natural patina that enriches its vintage character.
