Information

This brass candlestick, known as “The Knot of Friendship” was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden. Created in 1938, the design exemplifies Frank’s distinctive approach, blending functional utility with symbolic, organic form. The piece features three candleholders positioned at the ends of U-shaped arms, which are interconnected by an interwoven loop forming a stylized knot at the center. Viewed from above, the structure is symmetrical and crafted from flattened brass rods, each fitted with circular drip trays and cylindrical candle cups.

The brass exhibits a warm golden tone with a uniform patina, showing minor oxidation and surface wear consistent with age. The overall aesthetic is sculptural yet light, reflecting Frank’s philosophy of human-centered modernism and his rejection of rigid Central European functionalism. The knotted motif serves both decorative and symbolic purposes, representing connection and unity, and has become one of Svenskt Tenn’s iconic designs.

Josef Frank (1885–1967), originally an Austrian architect and designer, relocated to Sweden in the 1930s where he became the chief designer for Svenskt Tenn. His work is known for merging modernist principles with naturalistic and historical influences. His metalwork, including this candlestick, reveals the same careful attention to proportion and harmony evident in his furniture and textiles.

This candlestick is in good vintage condition, displaying slight tarnish and minor surface marks consistent with age, while retaining its original form and structural soundness.

The dimensions are 22 centimeters (8.7 inches) in diameter and 16 centimeters (6.3 inches) in height, embodying a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian design with symbolic depth.
