Information

This candlestick, known as the Knot of Friendship, presents a sculptural composition measuring 21 cm in diameter and 15.5 cm in height. Its three slender flutes rise in parallel, each supported by a continuous ribbon of solid brass that loops and weaves into an interlaced knot at the base. The rhythmic geometry of these curves creates both structural integrity and an expressive, unified form.

Crafted entirely in brass, the metalwork displays smooth, rounded edges where the bands converge and tension where they twist. At the heart of the knot, a polished brass sphere serves as a visual anchor, from which the ribbon arms unfurl symmetrically. Each candle holder is fitted with a circular drip plate, carefully proportioned to echo the curvature of the base while providing a practical catchment for wax.

Over decades, the candlestick’s surface has developed a light patina that gives the brass a warm, muted gold tone. Fine age-related surface marks and soft oxidation spots are visible upon close inspection, particularly along the inner curves of the loops. These subtle variations lend depth to the finish and attest to the piece’s history in use and display.

Josef Frank (1885–1967) was an architect and designer who, after relocating from Austria to Sweden in the 1930s, reshaped Scandinavian modernism with his humanistic approach. Frank resisted austere functionalism, favoring ornament, color, and natural motifs. This Knot of Friendship design, conceived in 1938, embodies his belief that objects should convey warmth and continuity, with the interlaced form symbolizing unity.

Produced by Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm, a firm founded in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, this candlestick is part of the company’s celebrated collaboration with Frank. Svenskt Tenn became synonymous with a decorative yet modern aesthetic, and their brass objects remain icons of Swedish design. The Knot of Friendship has endured as one of their most recognizable pieces.

The candlestick is in very good vintage condition. There are no dents, bends, or repairs to the brass. The patination and minor surface wear are consistent with careful use over many years, and all three candle holders sit securely within their drip plates.
