Josef Frank candlestick

This candlestick in brass was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1930s. The design features a sculptural arrangement of six candleholders rising on slender stems, supported by looping brass forms that create a rhythmic interplay of curves and balance. The circular base elements not only provide stability but also give the piece a sense of lightness and movement. The polished brass surface has developed a gentle patina over time, consistent with its age, while preserving the warm sheen characteristic of the material.

Josef Frank (1885–1967) was an Austrian-born architect and designer who became one of the most influential figures in Swedish modern design after emigrating to Sweden in the 1930s. His collaboration with Estrid Ericson at Svenskt Tenn resulted in a wide range of furniture and decorative objects that combined modernist principles with a humanistic and artistic approach. Unlike the strict functionalism of his contemporaries, Frank favored softer forms, natural motifs, and vibrant materials, resulting in works that remain timeless and highly sought after.

Svenskt Tenn, founded in Stockholm in 1924, is one of Sweden’s most important design institutions. Under the direction of Estrid Ericson and with contributions from Josef Frank, the company became synonymous with a distinctive form of Scandinavian modernism that blended craftsmanship, artistry, and a cosmopolitan outlook. Their brass objects, in particular, embody the studio’s commitment to high-quality materials and artisanal production, offering pieces that were both functional and decorative.

This candlestick is a fine example of Frank’s approach to design, where functionality is elevated by sculptural qualities and a sense of playfulness.
