Josef Frank side tables
This rare pair of side tables, model 961 “San Francisco” was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden. Created in 1939, these tables exemplify Frank’s unique approach to modern design, blending classical influences with a sense of lightness and adaptability. The tables are crafted from mahogany, showcasing a rich, warm tone that highlights the natural grain of the wood. Notably, this model was exhibited at the Golden Gate Exhibition in San Francisco during the summer of 1939.
The design features an asymmetrical top with rounded corners and an integrated raised edge on one side, a distinctive detail that enhances both functionality and visual appeal. The surface is finished with a finely grained mahogany veneer, exhibiting high-quality craftsmanship. The tables rest on slender, turned legs adorned with subtle decorative elements, connected by horizontal stretchers to provide added stability. The legs taper elegantly toward the floor, contributing to the tables’ refined and airy aesthetic.
Josef Frank, a pioneer of Swedish modernism, designed these tables as part of his broader vision of furniture that is both practical and decorative. His work with Svenskt Tenn combined Scandinavian craftsmanship with international design influences. The “San Francisco” model reflects Frank’s philosophy of organic and inviting forms, offering a contrast to the stricter functionalism of the period.
Each table measures 40 cm in width, 79.5 cm in depth, and 45 cm in height (15.7 x 31.3 x 17.7 inches). The pair is in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor wear consistent with their age.
