Information

This rare armchair, model no. 3758A, known as “The Red Chair” was designed by Kaare Klint and produced by the renowned Danish cabinetmaker Rud. Rasmussen in the 1930s. It stands as a refined example of early Danish modernism, skillfully combining classical proportions with meticulous craftsmanship.

The chair’s frame is crafted from solid Cuban mahogany, a hardwood prized for its durability, fine grain, and deep reddish-brown color. The seat and backrest are upholstered in Niger leather, a vegetable-tanned goatskin notable for developing a rich, warm patina over time. The upholstery is secured with brass nailhead trim, providing both decorative appeal and structural reinforcement. Slightly curved armrests enhance comfort and add visual harmony to the chair’s geometric form. The legs taper gently and are joined by horizontal stretchers, contributing to the piece’s stability and architectural presence.

Kaare Klint, often regarded as the father of Danish modern furniture, drew inspiration from functionalism and classical design, reinterpreting historical furniture with a focus on proportion, ergonomics, and craftsmanship. His work set the foundation for Scandinavian design principles that emphasize material quality and precise construction.

Rud. Rasmussen, one of Denmark’s most esteemed cabinetmakers, was known for exceptional woodworking and close collaborations with leading designers such as Klint. Their workshop ensured every piece adhered to the highest standards of craftsmanship and design integrity.

The chair measures approximately 61 cm in width, 56 cm in depth, and 89 cm in height (24 x 22 x 35 inches), with a seat height of 44 cm (17.3 inches). It remains in good vintage condition, showing signs of use and a beautifully aged leather patina. The mahogany frame is well preserved, and the natural aging of the leather enhances its character.
