Kaare Klint armchairs
This rare set of six armchairs, model 3208, was designed by Kaare Klint and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. Originally created in 1936, this set dates from 1963 and reflects Klint’s systematic approach to proportion, ergonomics, and traditional craftsmanship. Executed in solid oak with seats woven in hemp cord, the chairs display the characteristic clarity and restraint associated with early Danish modern design.
The oak frames present a warm, natural tone with a fine and even grain pattern. Each chair is constructed with a gently curved ladder-back composed of horizontal rails that provide support while maintaining an open, lightweight appearance. The armrests extend forward with a subtle downward curve, shaped for comfortable placement of the forearm. The legs are cylindrical and joined by multiple stretchers, reinforcing structural stability.
The seats are woven in hemp string using a tight, symmetrical pattern that conforms to the square frame while creating visual depth. The weaving is precise, with the cord forming a diagonal layout that meets cleanly at the center. This material choice reflects Klint’s interest in durable, natural components that age well and remain functional over decades of use.
Kaare Klint is regarded as the father of Danish modern furniture design, and his work set foundational principles for generations of designers. The 3208 armchair exemplifies his focus on human scale, measured construction, and craft tradition. Fritz Hansen, the manufacturer, contributed high-quality execution, evident in the detailing of joints, smooth shaping of the oak elements, and consistency of finish.
The condition is good vintage with small signs of usage and patina, including minor wear to the wood surfaces and light aging to the hemp seats. These traces are consistent with age and do not affect the structural stability or functionality of the chairs.
Each chair measures 63 cm in width, 53 cm in depth, and 86 cm in height. The seat height is 42.5 cm, and the arm height is 66 cm. This corresponds to approximately 24.8 x 20.9 x 33.9 inches, with a seat height of 16.7 inches and arm height of 26 inches.
