Sylvia Stave trays
Each tray features a shallow rectangular body with slightly raised, outward-angled edges and softly rounded corners. The flat surfaces are complemented by a small sculptural composition positioned near one of the shorter sides. The decoration depicts a stylized nude female figure accompanied by a deer or antelope, with the figures arranged in a dynamic, asymmetrical composition. The woman is shown in a relaxed, slightly leaning pose, while the animal’s elongated neck and angular legs introduce a contrasting geometric quality. The sculptural elements stand on small circular bases with ribbed detailing, creating a distinction between the smooth tray surfaces and the more expressive figurative ornamentation.
Sylvia Stave (1908–1994) was a Swedish designer known for her contributions to modern metalwork, particularly during her association with C.G. Hallberg in Stockholm. Her designs from the late 1920s and 1930s frequently combined simplified geometric forms with decorative elements inspired by classical sculpture and contemporary Art Deco aesthetics. Stave was part of a generation of Swedish designers working during the transition from the elegance of Swedish Grace toward the functionalist principles that became increasingly influential following the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930. Her work is characterized by carefully balanced proportions, refined surface treatments, and an interest in integrating sculptural details into functional objects.
C.G. Hallberg was established in Stockholm in 1860 and developed into one of Sweden’s prominent manufacturers and retailers of silverware, pewter, and decorative metal objects. During the early 20th century, the company worked with contemporary designers to develop collections that reflected changing artistic and stylistic preferences. Its production during the 1930s included objects influenced by Art Deco, Swedish Grace, and emerging Scandinavian modernism. Both trays bear the manufacturer’s crowned C.G. Hallberg monogram and additional stamped markings on their undersides, identifying their Swedish production.
The pair remains in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of age and use. The pewter surfaces retain their characteristic silvery-grey appearance, with light scratches, small marks, and areas of natural oxidation and patina. The sculptural figures remain well defined, with visible details in the human and animal forms.
Dimensions of each tray: Width 20.5 cm (8.1 inches), depth 15 cm (5.9 inches), height 8 cm (3.1 inches).
